((Many thanks to Shujin from Realms of Light and Shadow for this))
((Just to keep things simple, this is strictly addressed to all new members; however, it is possible that even old members can learn something from this. Thank you!))
For some who have never RP'd before, this can be sometimes be a confusing new process. As such, I have composed this handy RP primer to help you get started.
1. OOC and IC: The key points of the site, OOC and IC stand for Out of Character and In Character respectively. OOC means that you're actually talking as you, and not your created character. The most common way to indicate OOC is double paranthesis ((Like this)), although you can also just put OOC: and then type what you need to. If you're on the General Boards, however, you're constantly out of character anyways, and you don't need to use either sign. IC is when you're acting as your character in an RP board; your actions should preferabely be typed in the third person (i.e. He walked along the stone path instead of I walked along the stone path.) When you want your character to talk with someone elses, do something to address them (i.e. Shujin turned his head towards the other cat and said,"); also make sure to put whatever you say in quotes.
2.Acting for yourself: This can sometimes be tricky for new RPers, but you need to make sure that whenever you type down actions, you don't assume the actions of the others (i.e. Shujin swung his sword at his enemy; he parried his attack and quickly struck back, failing to notice Shujin's bared fangs.). This is called PowerPlaying, and I believe that you will be warned to change your post before it is deleted. Ideally, you'll want to have your character perform their action and end your post with that (i.e. Shujin swung his claws at the enemy, end post); this allows the other member to come up with their own response, and generally just keeps everything more fair.
3. Know your place: In real life, with the exception of time travelling or clones, it's impossible for anyone to be in two places at once; although this is a different world, that rule still applies. Don't have your character be eating dinner with some friends at Ambermill Inn while also fighting bandits alone in the mountains. If you just really want to be on more than one board at once, just say "This is before I was on the mountains" in OOC. Just stay logical here, and you'll do fine.
There is obviously much more information about the site, but you'll be able to find rules and such on other boards. This is just a brief primer on the basic rules of RPing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask here! Thank you for your time!
